Text to Speech - iPad Accessibility for ALL
To add text-to-speech accessibility on an iPad, you can use the built-in feature called "Speak Screen." This feature allows the iPad to read aloud the text displayed on the screen. Here are the steps to enable this feature:
- Open the Settings app on your iPad.
- Tap "General" and then "Accessibility."
- Scroll down and select "Spoken Content" and then "Speak Screen."
- Toggle the switch to turn on "Speak Screen."
- Toggle on the Speech Controller .
- Adjust the speaking rate and dialect to your preference.
- To activate Speak Screen, swipe down from the top of the screen with two fingers.
Once Speak Screen is activated, your iPad will read aloud any text on the screen, including web pages, books, and documents. You can also pause, rewind, and fast-forward the reading using the controls that appear on the screen.
Option 1: Two-finger swipe
- Open the Settings app on your iPad.
- Tap "General" and then "Accessibility."
- Scroll down and select "Spoken Content" and then "Speak Screen."
- Toggle the switch to turn on "Speak Screen."
- Adjust the speaking rate and dialect to your preference.
- To activate Speak Screen, simply swipe down from the top of the screen with two fingers.
Option 2: On-screen controller

Regardless of the method you choose, Speak Screen will read aloud any text on the screen, including web pages, books, and documents. You can customize the reading experience to your preference and have the option to use either the two-finger swipe, on-screen controller, or menu to activate the feature.
Text to Speech should be viewed as an accessibility for ALL users not just those who have written accommodations.
