Resize Image on Mac OS X
On a Mac you can resize your image for posting on a website using Preview. Image size is important when working with a website. When using a Content Management System like Edline, you may have a size limit restriction. However, you should also consider your audience. Larger images take more time to download. If you want people to enjoy your site, it should work as fast as possible. This is especially important for people with slower Internet access like dial-up. Consider the image I used to prepare this article. It started out as 1.7 MB. Using Martindale's File Download Time Calculator, this translates to 3 minutes and 57 seconds to download the image on a 56K modem (i.e. dial-up). After resizing it, the image was 328 KB (five times smaller) which now has a download speed of 45 seconds on a 56K modem. In reality, 45 seconds is a long time to wait, but definitely better than four minutes. Resize the Image 1. Open the image in Preview. Control-click on the image and mouse over Open With, then select Preview. 2. In the File menu, select Duplicate to make a copy of the image. Resize this duplicate. 3. In the Tools menu, select Adjust Size... 4. In the dropdown next to Width and Height, change the size units from inches to pixels. 5. Make sure the lock next to Width and Height is locked, then change the largest value (either Width or Height) to 600 pixels. The other value will automatically change, since the Width and Height are locked together. If this image is only intended for your website, you can also change the Resolution to 72 pixels/inch. Anything higher will not provide value on a monitor, and the lower resolution will also decrease the size of the image. Click OK 6. In the File menu, select Save... 7. Change the name in Save As, so you don't overwrite your original image. Set the Quality to Best. Click Save. Upload this new, smaller image to your website.

Teacher MacBook's not recognizing external DVD players with Big Sur OS.
Teacher's MacBook's that have the Big Sur OS have had trouble recognizing external DVD players. Here is a step by step guide to implementing this fix. Plug in the external DVD player and insert the DVD. Restart the MacBook with the external DVD player plugged in First you go to Disk Utility and run "First Aid" on the disk drive. Once that is completed download VLC player, be sure to click and drag the VLC icon onto the applications folder when the pop up box appears. Once it is fully installed, do to system preferences, click the CD & DVD settings, check the box that puts a eject button at the top of the screen (This is a master eject button that will eject any disk no matter what.) Once that is completed click the "When you insert a DVD" pull down button and click "Open other application" and search for VLC in the pop up that appears. That will make VLC the default player. At this time the DVD symbol should appear on the desktop. Once it does open VLC player, click open disk and there should be a description of the DVD in the player, click that and the movie should start playing. This is far from a perfect or long term solution but it should work for now

FileVault - Staff macOS computer data encryption
We are deploying FileVault 2 data encryption to all staff Mac laptop computers. What is the benefit of data encryption on staff computers? In a normal day, staff may download identifiable data on your Mac laptop. If that laptop get stolen, the downloaded data is available and accessible for whoever that has the computer. Data encryption will encode the information stored on your Mac, so that it can’t be read unless the login password is entered. Will this slow down my computer? The initial encryption process will take a couple of minutes. The login process will be a little slower, maybe a 10-60 seconds slower for the data get decrypted. What does it look like during the first time that FileVault encryption run? Open Self Service > Search FileVault > Click Encrypt button Staff will see a Management Action window pop up at the bottom right corner. If staff select Submit with the Start now option, the encryption is scheduled to run at logout/restart/shutdown. It will NOT restart staff computers automatically. Enter the password to add the user account so this user can unlock the FileVault encryption. If staff selects Cancel, this action will run again at the next logout/restart/shutdown. The next window will inform the user that FileVault is enabling on the system. Click OK or leave it. That's it! At the next login to the account, the user will see a progress bar for about 10-60 seconds before the user account is logged in.
