New Year Canvas Course Setup Checklist - Secondary Teachers
A checklist for secondary teachers to make sure their secondary Canvas courses are set up properly for the new school year. NOTE: Students' overall class grades will be calculated out of Synergy gradebook and visible in Student/ParentVUE. All assignments and assignment scores should be entered in Canvas. "Cross List" Similar Classes (combining multiple sections of the same course) If you are cross listing sections, this needs to be done before the start of term. (instructions) Synergy Gradebook Prep - Match "Assignment Groups" Since Synergy gradebook is going to calculate your students' final grades, it is NECESSARY to ensure your Canvas "Assignment Groups" match your Synergy "Assignment Types". See full instructions here: Syncing Assignments & Scores To Synergy ("Grade Passback") Canvas Assignment Setup Due Date: Required Available Until Date Recommended Assignment submissions 100% Digital ("Online") 100% Paper ("No Submission") Hybrid Digital or in-person ("Online") - If an assignment has the option of submitting digitally or in person, include "text entry" as a submission option and have students note in the text box that they submitted in person. This will avoid inaccurately flagging these assignments as missing. Set up Grade Passback (GPB) in Canvas Read both of the following KB articles carefully. Many reported "issues" stem from not understanding how GPB works. Syncing Assignments & Scores To Synergy ("Grade Passback") Canvas Grade Passback - Advanced Features & "Need to Knows" Nightly Sync = ON (default) Canvas Course Settings Hide Overall Class Grade Settings → Course Details tab → "more options" link → "Hide totals in student grades summary" should be checked. (this is the default) Show "Grades" in course navigationSettings → Navigation tab. If it is hidden, enable it. This will let students and parents see assignment scores at status information. Enable "Grade Sync" in course navigation. Same as above. This will let you as a teacher see it. Students will not see it.

Duplicate a Quiz in a Canvas Course
Before you begin Important Disclaimer: This duplication method can only be used once per quiz, question bank, or any other course content item. Canvas has confirmed that copying a quiz or course content item more than one time may completely overwrite the original or previous copies. If you anticipate you will need to make more than one copy, we recommend exporting the quiz file from the course and then importing the quiz file as a QTI file back into the course. When importing the Canvas quiz QTI file, do not check the box titled, "Overwrite assessment content with matching IDs." Duplicating a Quiz Open the Quizzes link in your Canvas course Click the 3 dots next to the quiz you want to duplicate Click Copy to A Copy To… window will open on the right side. Type the course number you would like to copy the quiz to. You can find the course number in the web address bar. It may take a couple of minutes for the Quizzes page to update and show the new quiz.

Moving Canvas Assignments and Material to Google Classroom
This article covers three points: Google Classroom Topics are similar to Canvas Modules Moving a Canvas assignment to Google Classroom Moving a Canvas file to Google Classroom Important note: Teachers will NOT lose access to their Canvas classes and materials. Even though we won’t be rostering students and classes into Canvas for the 24/25 school year, staff will continue to have access to Canvas and all their materials saved there. Topics in Google Classroom are similar to Modules in Canvas Instead of organizing your material and assignments into modules like Canvas, Google Classroom uses topics under the Classwork tab. Topics can be created to help you keep material organized in many ways such as by subject, unit, or week. Students can click on the Classwork tab and see the topics if there are any posted assignments or materials. Assignments/material saved as a draft will not be visible to students. Moving a Canvas Assignment to Google Classroom Note: The district will create and roster classes in Google Classroom for you in the fall. You can set up your own Classroom to store assignments and material if you want to start transitioning from Canvas to Classroom. Once an item is in Classroom, it is easy to copy it from one class to another. You’ll need to have both Google Classroom and Canvas open in different tabs or windows. There are three options for student access to the file Students can view file They will not be able to edit the document. If they make a copy of the file, it will not be attached to the assignment Students can edit file (Not recommended) The entire class can edit the original file. They will be able to see each other’s edits. This will alter your original file without saving a blank copy. Make a copy for each student (recommended!) The original file will be preserved and each student will receive a separate copy of the file. Their copy of the file is attached to their assignment and stays organized in Classroom as well as in their Google Drive. They can edit and turn in their file without altering your original. Choose the topic if you are organizing this assignment into a category. To save this assignment for later, click the arrow next to Assign and choose Save draft.
